Why Do Diabetic Feet Require Exceptional Care?

Prolonged hyperglycemia can result in peripheral sensory neuropathy—reducing the sensation of pain, temperature, and mechanical stress—as well as impaired microvascular circulation. Consequently, minor blisters or friction abrasions can rapidly progress into deep, challenging ulcers without early perception.

The 3-Minute Daily Foot Inspection Routine - Inspect the soles, heels, and interdigital spaces daily in adequate illumination. - Utilize a handheld mirror or assist from a family member if mobility is restricted. - Look out for: localized erythema, deep fissuring, calluses, blisters, maceration, or fungal discoloration.

Cleansing and Clinical Hydration Rules 1. Wash feet daily in lukewarm water using a gentle cleanser; test water temperature with the elbow or a thermometer to prevent unperceived scalds. 2. Pat dry thoroughly with a soft towel, paying dedicated attention between the toes. 3. Apply a specialized urea-based moisturizing cream (e.g. 10% Urea) across heels and dry dorsum, but **never apply cream between the toes** as trapped moisture breeds fungal infections.

Safe Footwear Protocols - Never walk barefoot, even indoors on carpets or smooth tiles. - Wear seamless, breathable cotton socks that do not exert constrictive band pressure. - Always inspect the interior of shoes manually before sliding feet in to detect foreign objects or rough seams.
